"Pretty Boy" Floyd "Money" Mayweather, one of the most arrogant boxers I have ever heard of, just claimed during an interview that race plays a factor in his popularity. He claims that if he were white, that he would be a lot more popular than he is as a black man.
"If you're rich, you're a rich n-----," he said. "If you're poor, you're a poor n----. If you're smart, you're a smart n-----. At the end of the day, they still look at me as a n-----."
Mayweather went on to say:
"I wouldn't change my life for nothing in the world. There's nothing like being young, black and rich. But there are certain things you think about. If Floyd Mayweather was white, I'd be the biggest athlete in America. The biggest, the biggest. I know that for a fact."
I don't think that race plays any factor in the popularity of Mayweather at all. I think his attitude is what turns people off. Look at Muhammad Ali and Michael Jordan. They are both legendary black superstars. Race never held them back. If I could talk to Mayweather I would tell him that the only way to be more popular is to stop being so cocky. If he was a nicer guy with a smaller ego, he might be more popular. It also doesn't help that he's into boxing, a sport that is not as popular as it used to be.

I agree he is and arrogant guy. But it's part of his persona now. He is somewhat similar to Kanye in a way in that the more we and the media complain about him, the more ridiculous stunts they pull (see: Pretty Boy on WWE, multiple times). I wish Mayweather would just go away. Or Roy Jones Jr. would walk by and show him what's it like to be a real boxer.
ReplyDeleteYea Mayweather is being kind of arrogant here, but on the other hand there is some truth to what he says about black people. BUT as you said, Muhammad Ali and Michael Jordan didn't have this problem. Perhaps if Mayweather was less cocky he would be more popular.
ReplyDeleteHeads up.
ReplyDelete1. Muhammad Ali was definitely hated, scorned and threatened often for being black, arrogant, cocky and in his words . . . pretty.
2. Michael Jordan was/is very arrogant and selfish. He's just smart enough to keep his mouth shut and let his PR people do most of the talking.
3. Floyd Mayweather Jr.
What many people don't realize is that the character we are all witnessing is Floyd's creation. Prior to his big fights against Oscar De La Hoya, Ricky Hatton and Marquez he was just beginning to become media saavy particularly against Zab Judah, who's considered a problem kid, a jerk. He presented himself as a regular fighter but outside of the hardcore boxing fans, like myself, he never got any credit, recognition or big-money fight. When the opportunity came to face Oscar De La Hoya, he realized that a heel would sell better than a regular great undefeated guy that no one knew. Hence "Pretty Boy" Floyd Mayweather Jr. became Money Mayweather, the arrogant young, rich and black asshole that rubs so many people wrong.
At the end, Mayweather Jr. is a smart defensive fighter that lives in the gym.
